IBM's New Supercomputer
The power of modern computing continues to grow exponentially as the limits and boundaries of technology repeatedly broken and redefined by boffins around the world. This week sees computer giant IBM seeking to find yet more new ground with the launch of the world's fastest commercial supercomputer.
In terms of the performance upgrade being introduced by IBM, the new supercomputer in question, Blue Gene/P, is reportedly able to offer three times the speed of the current titleholder of ‘ world's fastest commercial supercomputer’ which also happens to be an IBM creation (Blue Gene/L). According to a BBC report on IBM's new piece of super hardware, Blue Gene/P is approximately 100,000 times more powerful than a regular desktop personal computer and is able to deliver "petaflop" operational speeds that equate to around 1,000 trillion calculations each second.
