One Child at a Time Full Story

Robert Kayikia

Robert is not sure how old he is because there is no one living who knows when he was born. Because both parents have died from AIDS, Robert has spent his life being passed from one relative to another in the Bugonzi village.

Now that Robert is old enough to work in the banana fields and bring in an income, he has been allowed to live with his aunt's family. This young man will continue to reside with her while he is waiting for the GCCI project to open.

Robert began attending school in 2006 after being selected as one of the oldest GCCI children. The Project guesses that Robert is about 15 years-old.

Determined and intelligent, Robert is trying desperating to catch up in school. He is embarrassed that he is much older and taller than the other children in his class. Robert is a very talented artist. In 2007 he was given his very first blank piece of drawing paper and sat for an hour trying to decide what to draw because he thought it was the only piece of paper he would receive.

When a visiting American GCCI sponsor presented Robert with a whole stack of paper he almost cried. Through a translator he said, "Now I can get all the things I have dreamed of drawing out of my head and think of more."

Robert is a boy with a huge heart and dreams of being a Pastor so he can bring hope to the people of his village. He wants to be like the visiting sponsors and missionaries who have given him a new life.

Robert is a hard worker, quick thinker, and great singer. He looks forward to someday touring with the GCCI choir so he can spend more time with sponsors who have "happy white love to share with him."

Glory Children's City International (GCCI) is a group of more than 30 people who joined together in 2005 to make life better for a group of orphans in Masaka, Uganda. All of the officers and board members are volunteers. Administrative supplies, time, and all items needed for the GCCI project are donated by the board and other members. This is a program designed so 100% of their funding and resources to go directly to the children.
