US Ad Slowdown Looms Over Media Companies (AP)
Earnings reports from three major media companies -- CBS Corp., The Walt Disney Co., and Viacom Inc. -- this week show the malaise in local ad markets beginning to spread to national cable and broadcast networks. All three companies so far have been able to weather the downturn with a mix of cost-cutting, higher affiliate revenues from cable and satellite partners, and resiliency in attendance at theaters and theme parks.

Luke Russert To Join NBC (FishbowlDC)
NBC News President Steve Capus said "Never before in an election cycle has so much attention turned to the youth vote, and Luke will bring a unique perspective to covering it." Said Luke: "I am extremely humbled and grateful that NBC News is giving me this opportunity. I believe youth issues will continue to play a significant role during this election and I want to do my part to report them honestly and objectively." NYT/TV Decoder: Before his father's unexpected death in June, Russert already had extensive media experience. For two years he has co-hosted an XM radio show with the political pundit James Carville. Two weeks after his father died, he appeared on Larry King Live and discussed the dramatic rise in the number of young people who are showing interest in this year's election. AP via USAT: Russert told MSNBC.com that he realizes some might say it was only his name that got him the job, but he's ready for the challenge and plans to work hard.
Star-Ledger Announces Large-Scale Buyout Offer (Newark Star-Ledger)
The owners of the Newark Star-Ledger announced they will sell the newspaper if they cannot win union concessions and persuade a large number of non-union, full-time workers to take buyouts. The owners set a deadline of Oct. 1 for getting 200 of the paper's 756 non-union full-time employees to take a buyout and for achieving the union concessions. The paper's total workforce is 1,412. NYT: At The Times of Trenton, the much-smaller sister to the Star-Ledger, a note was sent to employees calling for at least 25 non-union buyouts. At both papers, the buyout figures cited do not include buyouts that Advance plans to seek among unionized employees. NYO: "There are quite a few reporters -- some who have been there their whole career -- who will be gone by Oct. 1," said a source. "Most of them weren't planning on leaving until this morning." WSJ: NYO owner Jared Kushner interested in buying the Star-Ledger?
How NBC News Will Get Around China's Internet Censorship (TVNewser)
NBC News insiders say they have a way of getting around the Chinese government's decision to censor some Internet sites. NBC News is not working out of the Main Press Center or the International Broadcast Center where most global journalists set up shop. Instead they are working out of the Beijing International Convention Center. And so far, NBC News personnel have not encountered any problems. NYT/TV Decoder: Matt Lauer to co-anchor Olympics opening ceremony with Bob Costas. Portfolio: Should news orgs boycott the Olympics, asks Jeff Bercovici. Hollywood Reporter: NBC's top man at the Beijing Olympics is excited about athletes breaking records, but he's also prepared for any breaking hard news. We're ready to move from sports and Olympics to news the moment something really serious happens here," Dick Ebersol said.
