After a sluggish start, the major averages finished the past week higher, as expectations for a rate cut at the Federal Reserve's next meeting helped ease growing concerns about problems in the housing and credit markets.�

Despite early optimism about the start to the holiday shopping season, U.S. stocks tumbled on Monday.� The sell-off was led by a drop in financial shares as investors worried that credit market losses will weigh on consumer spending and the overall economy during the holiday shopping period.�
