To become the moderator of an ownerless community, you must be a member of that community for at least a week. A become moderator link will appear in the community if you're eligible to become the moderator. When the become moderator link is displayed, simply click the link to assume community ownership.

Please keep in mind that you won't be able to join an ownerless community if it's moderated.
