The Fool

Pamela Coleman-Smith's artful rendition of an "innocent Fool" archetype (Rider-Waite deck) is often used to represent Tarot in general. Early classical versions of the Fool card, however, portray quite a different character -- a person driven by base needs and urges, who has fallen into a state of poverty and deprivation.
In some instances, he is made out to be a carnival entertainer or a huckster. In others, he is portrayed as decrepit and vulnerable -- as the cumulative result of his delusions and failures. Not until the 20th century do you see the popular Rider-Waite image of the Fool arise -- that of an innocent Soul before its Fall into Matter, as yet untainted by contact with society and all its ills.
Modern decks usually borrow from the Rider-Waite imagery. Most Fool cards copy the bucolic mountainside scene, the butterfly, the potential misplaced step that will send the Fool tumbling into the unknown. Don't forget, however, that the earlier versions of this card represented already-fallen humanity, over-identified with the material plane of existence, and beginning a pilgrimage towards self-knowledge, and eventually, wisdom. The Fool reminds us to recognize the path of personal development within ourselves -- and the stage upon that path where we find ourselves -- in order to energize our movement toward deeper self-realization.

A Love That Lasts
This season, the planets align to transform the excitement of spring fever into a more practical love. Starting April 17, you'll be less likely to get distracted by a shiny object, and more willing to make the most of what you already have. [more]
Mercury enters earthy Taurus, followed by the Sun on April 19 -- this will counteract restrictive Saturn and passionate Pluto on April 18-21. But tricky emotional currents on April 22-24 might inspire you to act the fool, so think before you make a move. Still, your head will probably win out on May 1, when Venus's harmonious dance with Saturn and Pluto will motivate you to put in the necessary effort to create relationship stability. But a bump in the road comes on May 26, when Venus meets up with too-serious Saturn, which means the party's over for a while. Mercury goes into retrograde on May 27, creating confusion and making communication difficult.
Making Love Stay
Beware: Venus's square with Uranus -- the planet of surprises -- can reveal cracks in even the most solid relationships on June 12. Sparks fly, though, and new ways of expressing love can rev up your routine. As lovely Venus meets up with dreamy Neptune on June 13, you'll feel your fantasies heat up and your world will be colored with beautiful illusions. This is a make or break situation, though. If you work at making your relationship real, you can elevate the love in your life. If you are lazy about expressing love or confronting problems, spring will end by showing you where you've fallen short. Finally, Venus's tense opposition to dramatic Pluto on June 18 will reveal to you either a deeper love or the power struggle in the love you already have. Mercury leaves retrograde on June 19, allowing you to resolve confusion and sort through mixed messages.
